THE FORTINGALL YEW TREE :: This is one of my tree sketches from the time I traveled around the world back in the early 2000’s. When I was in Scotland I went to visit the Fortingall Yew tree. This tree is thought to be one of the oldest if not THE oldest living thing on Earth. It is thought to be between 2000 and 5000 years old. Indeed when I was in its presence there was an indescribable feeling, I was in the presence of a being ancient and deep and so much more. It was very humbling. What it would have seen and known… just imagine something so old and still with an untold age left to live. I stayed there for a while and began this sketch. It was in a churchyard… its funny how religions/churches find the ‘power centres’ and claim them. In times before the church there would have been druids or their ilk doing their thing there. Indeed there are some circles and standing stones nearby. So many mysteries. It was something very special to me to make the journey there and the memory of it is powerful and comforting. If any of you get the chance, go and visit the Fortingall Yew and spend some time with it. Doug Menadue.

BLACK SPINEL :: ROSE BRILLIANT :: AUSTRALIA :: 12MM :: 7.3CT :: Here is a beautiful glossy black spinel cut in a design that would be perfect for any jewellery setting. Black spinel is THE black gemstone of choice. It has a pure black colour unlike black diamonds which tend to be a steely grey colour. This is a very fine natural black spinel gemstone!

* As a side note, I have noticed lately the appearance of stones being marketed as black sapphires. It is my belief that these are actually black spinel. It seems that the ones I saw were Australian stones and, to my surprise, that Australia was a leading producer of these ‘black sapphires’. This was news to me as I was unaware that there were black sapphires let alot Australia produced so many. I got in touch with some friends who lived and mined on the Sapphire gemfields for decades and were in their time one of the biggest miners there. They also were surprised as in all their time they never saw any. They mined plenty of black spinels but no black sapphires. They said yes you can certainty get very very dark blue or green sapphires which can look black or ‘bombs’ which are low grade opaque sapphires but shine a bright enough torch through them and you will see color. So I suspect this is another case of buyer beware and that the prices being asked would be much higher and out of step with prices for equivalent black spinels. So in short, if you are considering buying one of these ‘black sapphires’ check it out first. Ask if there is a certificate to verify that it is actually a sapphire. Otherwise I think you’ll be buying a very expensive black spinel.

MALI GARNETS :: MINI-MINT & BRILLIANT PEAR :: MATCHED SUITE OF 8 GEMS :: 6MM :: 9TCW :: The fancy coloured garnets are without doubt one of my most favorite of gems. The fancy colours are the oranges, yellows and greens… they are always exceptionally bright, really really bright! They have great fire and are always high performers. I love the colours, stunning and full of life… they are happy uplifting gems and are always a pleasure to see. What I have here is a very rare matched suite of beautiful Mali garnets. There are three orange/yellow Mini-Mints, three light minty green Mini-Mints and two Brilliant Pears. They are all finely matched in terms of colour and saturation. I would like to keep them as a suite as they would make a really special jewellery item, something that would be totally dazzling. All the gems are over 1 carat… the Mini-Mints are in the 1.1 to 1.2 carat range and the Brilliant Pears are 1.35 carats each.

'TREE FROM A GARDEN IN FEZ' :: Just before the world changed forever I spent three months wandering around Morocco. Near the palace in Fez I discovered a small public garden wherein I spent several afternoons sketching an old tree that stood alone in the centre of the garden. It reminded me of an arm stretching up out of the earth quietly reaching.
